Researchers in Oxfordshire are exploring new ways to make the neurodevelopmental assessment process more efficient, using digital tools and artificial intelligence (AI) to help streamline referrals and reduce waiting times.
What’s the project about?
At the moment, referrals to the Oxfordshire CAMHS neurodevelopmental conditions (NDC) assessment clinic are completed using paper forms. These are reviewed by specialist clinicians who assess children and young people for autism and/or ADHD.
The new project aims to improve this process by developing:
An online referral form, to make it easier and faster to submit information.
An AI tool, to help clinicians review information more quickly and identify which clinic and clinician would be the best fit for each young person.
By gathering key details earlier in the process, the team hopes to:
Speed up the overall assessment process.
Improve accuracy in clinic allocation.
Highlight other sources of support that could help families sooner.
How can parent carers get involved?
The research team would like to hear from parents of young people who have experience of neurodevelopmental assessments. Your insights will help shape how the study is designed, delivered, and communicated.
They’re particularly interested in your views on:
Whether AI tools could be helpful in this context.
Possible risks or drawbacks to consider.
What would make the study easier for families to understand.
This is a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) opportunity — you’ll be paid £25 for an hour of your time, and any access needs or adjustments will be supported.
