A message from Jane Elvidge (Oxfordshire County Council)

Many thanks to those of you who attended the Ordinarily Available SEND Provision listening events on Monday 3rd Feb or completed the survey. It’s really helpful to know how you would like schools to use Oxfordshire’s Ordinarily Available SEND Provision document with you as part of the assess, plan, do review cycle.

Here’s a summary of what we have learnt:

  • 84% of parents/carers were unaware of ‘A parent’s guide to how my child is doing at school’ by SENDIASS, Oxfordshire

  • 100% of parents/carers were unaware of the SEN Support leaflet by Whole School SEND

  • 79% of parents/carers were unaware of Oxfordshire’s Ordinarily Available SEND Provision.

    • Of those that had heard of it 11% had heard from setting/school

  • This gives us some clear actions to work with SENDIASS, settings and our local offer co-ordinator to ensure that these materials are widely available to parents/carers and that support is available to support parents/carers to understand how they can use and refer to them to support their child or young person.

We asked parents/carers to reflect on how they would like settings to use the Oxfordshire’s Ordinarily Available SEND Provision in meetings and discussion with them. The preferences are shown below. Parents/carers attending the event who had children with Education Health and Care Plans saw how this could have been useful for their children but that this was too late to be of benefit to them. Parents/carers did not feel that their experiences of SEN Support in schools and settings were in line with ‘ordinarily available’ and highlighted where they saw gaps in the system. E.g. SEND not being mentioned at school open days, when children and young people are unable to attend school

Next steps:

  • Work with SENDIASS and PcF and school representatives to create guidance for schools/settings on how they could use Oxfordshire’s Ordinarily Available SEND Provision in their meetings with parents/carers to support their implementation of a graduated approach.

  • Share guidance with settings and schools and promote the use of Oxfordshire’s Ordinarily Available SEND Provision

We are keen to hear from more parents and carers, particularly those with children and young people at SEN Support on the SEN register. Please do complete the survey by the end of February to inform the next steps in supporting a collective understanding of the Oxfordshire’s Ordinarily Available SEND Provision and how best to make use of it.
