CAMHS NDC: Emotional School Based Avoidance (EBSA)

We’re pleased to share insights from our recent webinar, “Emotional School Based Avoidance (EBSA): Understanding and Supporting Children and Young People.” This session was designed to support parent carers in understanding school-related distress, why it happens, and how families and schools can work together to reduce anxiety and support engagement.

Hosted in collaboration between the Oxfordshire Parent Carers Forum (OxPCF), Oxfordshire CAMHS, and Oxfordshire County Council Educational Psychology Service, the session brought together clinical and educational expertise to explore EBSA in a practical and compassionate way.

Together, the presenters shared insights into the emotional drivers behind school avoidance, how EBSA can present differently for each child, and approaches that prioritise understanding, collaboration, and reducing distress.

Key Topics Covered:

• What EBSA is (and what it is not)

• Understanding the emotional and environmental drivers behind school avoidance

• How anxiety, neurodivergence, and unmet needs can contribute to school distress

• Recognising early signs and patterns of EBSA
