CAMHS NDC: Autistic Burnout

We’re pleased to share insights from our recent webinar, “Autistic Burnout: Understanding and Supporting Children and Young People.” This session was designed to help parent carers recognise the signs of autistic burnout, understand what contributes to it, and explore supportive, low-pressure approaches to recovery and wellbeing.

Hosted in collaboration between the Oxfordshire Parent Carers Forum (OxPCF) and Oxfordshire CAMHS Neurodevelopmental Conditions (NDC) team, the session brought together clinical perspectives to explore how burnout can impact autistic children and young people across home, school, and daily life.

The webinar focused on helping families understand the cumulative impact of stress, masking, sensory demands, and unmet needs, and how reducing pressure and supporting recovery can make a meaningful difference.

Key Topics Covered:

• What autistic burnout is and how it differs from anxiety or low mood

• Recognising signs of burnout, including withdrawal, exhaustion, and reduced functioning

• The impact of masking, sensory overload, and ongoing stress

• Understanding the “energy” or “capacity” model (spoons, battery, bucket)

• Why traditional expectations and demands can increase burnout
